Teaching objectives:
1. To enable the students to have a better understanding of the definition of Subjunctive Mood.
2. To get the students master the structure and usage of the Subjunctive Mood.
3. To enable the students to use the Subjunctive Mood in certain situations with in different tenses correctly.
Key point: To get the students master the structure and usage of the Subjunctive Mood.
Difficult point: To enable the students to use the Subjunctive Mood in certain situations
Teaching method: Task-Based Language teaching method
Teaching procedures:
Step 1:Lead-in
Good morning everyone! First of all,let’s appreciate two poems and pay attention to the tenses(ppt):
(1)If you were a teardrop; In my eye,
For fear of losing you, I would never cry.
And if the golden sun, Should cease to shine its light,
Just one smile from you ,Would make my whole world bright.
(2)How should we like it were stars to burn,
With a passion for us we could not return?
If equal affection cannot be,
Let the more loving one be me.
Were all stars to disappear or die,
I should learn to look at an empty sky,
And feel its total dark sublime,
Though this might take me a little time.
Step 2: Discovery
compare two sentences I mentioned and know the difference between a fact and a wish.Compare and find the difference, Is it a fact or a wish?
1)If it doesn’t rain tomorrow,I would visit my teacher.(a fact)
2)If you were a teardrop; In my eye,for fear of losing you, I would never cry.

Step 3: Summary and practice
In the following parts, Ss are required to summarize the grammatical rules of subjunctive mood by reading three groups of sentences given by the teacher. Then three different kinds of exercise are prepared for them to practice the rules they have reviewed
Task 1: Review subjunctive mood in if clause and do some practice
If I lived near school, I would go to school on foot every day.
If you had worked hard last month, you would have got satisfactory results in the monthly exam.
If you were to be free tomorrow, you would be happy.
Practice: Creating movie lines for the classic movie "Titanic"
Jack: Rose
1.If I (not win) the ticket, I wouldn't have been on board. If I hadn't been on board, I (not meet) you. 2.If I (not meet) you, I (not find) the love of my life. So winning that ticket was the luckiest thing that had happened to me. Rose: Jack
3.If we (live), we should live a happy life.
4. If we both (live), nothing would separate us in the future.
5. If we both (live) tomorrow, it would be the most unforgettable memory.
Observe and summary the form:
My friends couldn’t understand me; otherwise I wouldn’t have quarreled with him.
Without parents, there would be no one forcing us to study.
When I graduate, without teachers I would enjoy more freedom.
Observe and summary the form:
How I wish I were education minister.
How I wish I had not been so strict with you before.
How I wish I could stay here to teach you.
Tense wish/ would rather/ if only(要是…..就好了)
Task two: Practice makes perfect
Read the following sentences, and try to fill in the blanks with the proper form of the given words or correct the sentence.
1.I enjoyed the movie very much. I wish I _____ (read)the book from which it was made.
2.You are late. If you (come) a few minutes earlier, you (met)him.
3.The two students talked as if they (be)friends for years.
4.It is important that I (speak) with Mr. Williams immediately.
5.He looked as if he (be)ill for a long time.
6.If the doctor had come earlier, the poor child would not _____(lie)for two hours.
7.I can’t stand him. He always talks as though he (know) everything.
Step 4: Writing
Ss are required to write a short passage about their life by using subjunctive mood based on the previous revision task.
Step 5: Consolidation
Time permitting, after sharing their classmates’ wishes, they are required to appreciate an article and understand there are not so many ifs in our life. Only when we live today to the fullest can we realize our ambition.
Step 6: Homework
Assign Ss to do some exercise related to subjunctive mood.
