Mrs. Wilkinson (Dance Teacher): Prepare, one, and two. Strong position, weight on both legs and 1)pirouette and down…Up you get. Find a place on that bloody wall and focus on that spot. Then whip your head round and come back to that spot. Prepare, one and two, and….Have you got the spot? Prepare. Prepare. Go! Go! Go! Go! Go, Billy!
Dad: Ballet?
Billy: What’s wrong with ballet?
Dad: What’s wrong with ballet?
Billy: It’s perfectly normal.
Dad: Perfectly normal?
Billy’s nanna: I used to go to ballet.
Billy: See?
Dad: Aye, for your nanna, for girls, not for 2)lads, Billy. Lads do football, or boxing, or wrestling. Not friggin’ ballet. From now on you can forget about the fuckin’ ballet. From now on you stay here, you look after your nanna. Got it?
Nanna: They used to say that I could have been a professional dancer if I’d had the training.
Dad: Will you shut up?
Billy: I hate you! You’re a bastard!
Teacher: This’ll sound strange, Billy. But for some time now, I’ve been thinking of the Royal Ballet School.
Billy: Aren’t you a bit old, Miss.
Teacher: No, not me. You. I’m the bloody teacher. They hold auditions in 3)Newcastle.
Billy: I’ll never be good enough. I hardly know 4)aught.
Teacher: No, look, they’re not interested in how much ballet you know. They’ll teach you that. That’s why they’re a ballet school. It’s how you move, and how you express yourself that’s important.
Billy: Express what?
Teacher: I think you’re good enough to go for it. But it would mean an awful lot of hard work.
Billy: But I’m banned.
Teacher: Maybe I should have a word with him.
Billy: No, Miss!
Teacher: No, I could teach you on your own if you want.
Billy: We couldn’t afford it.
Teacher: I’m not doin’ it for the money, Billy.
Billy: But what about Dad?
Teacher: He doesn’t need to know.
Billy: What about my boxing and that?
Teacher: Oh 5)for fuck’s sake, Billy, if you want to piss around with your little mates, that fine with me!
Billy: Well, all right. All right, don’t lose your 6)blob.
Teacher: Blob?
Billy: So we could do it private, like?
Teacher: Just you and me.
Billy: Miss, you don’t fancy me, do you?
Teacher: (smile) No, Billy. Funnily enough, I don’t. Now 7)piss off.
Billy: (smile) Piss off yourself.
Teacher: See you Monday, then?
Teacher: Brought your things?
Billy: I don’t know if they’re right, Miss?
Teacher: If they’re special to you, they’re right.
Billy: What are they for?
Teacher: To give us some ideas for a dance. Come on then, let’s see ’em. What’s that?
Billy: It’s a letter. It’s my mom’s. She wrote it for when I was 18, but I opened it.
Teacher: To my son, Billy. Dear Billy, I know I must seem like a distant memory to you, which is probably a good thing. It will have been a long time and I will have missed seeing you grow, missed you crying, laughing, and shouting…
Billy: …I would have missed telling you off. But please know that I was always there…
Teacher: …with you, through everything.
Billy: …with you through everything. I always will be and I am proud to have known you and I am proud that you were mine. Always be yourself. I love you forever.
Teacher: Mom.
(Ballet music, Swan Lake)
Billy: It’s 8)cush, isn’t it? So is there a story, then, Miss?
Teacher: Of course. It’s about a woman who’s captured by an evil magician.
Billy: Sounds crap.
Teacher: And this woman, this beautiful woman is forced to be a swan. Except for a few hours every night, she becomes alive, she becomes real again. And then one night, she meets this young prince and he falls in love with her. And she realises this is the one thing that will allow her to become a real woman once more.
Billy: So then what happens?
Teacher: He promises to marry her and then he goes off with someone else, of course.
Billy: So she has to be a swan 9)for good.
Teacher: She dies.
Billy: …’cause the prince didn’t love her?
Teacher: Come on, it’s time to go.
Billy: It’s only a ghost story.
Teacher: Come on.
(Doorbell, door opens)
Dad: How much is it gonna cost?
Teacher: And a happy Christmas to you too. Not as much as you might think. Maybe two 10)grand. But there’s a good chance the council…
Dad: Two grand. I was talking about the auditions.
Teacher: Now look, it’s just a matter of the trip to London. I’ll give you the money for the fare.
Dad: I didn’t come here to be 11)patronised.
Teacher: Oh, no one’s trying to patronise you. You’re being ridiculous.
Dad: Am I?
Teacher: Yes!
Dad: Thanks for everything you’ve done for Billy. But he is my son, isn’t he? I’ll handle this myself.
Tony (Billy’s brother): Dad! What the fuck you doing? Dad, you can’t go back, not now.
Dad: Look at the state of us, man! What have we got to offer that poor 12)sod?
Tony: You can’t do this! Not now. Not after all this time. Not after everything we’ve been through!
Dad: It’s for 13)wee Billy! He might be a fucking genius for all we know.
Tony: For fuck’s sake, Dad. You can’t do this, man. Dad, Dad. He’s only 11, for fuck’s sake. He’s a kid. He’s just a fucking little kid.
Dad: I’m sorry. I’m sorry, son.
Tony: Please. Please.
Dad: I’m sorry, son. We’re finished, son. What choice have we got, eh? Let’s give the boy a fucking chance!
Tony: Please. Please. Don’t do this to me, Dad. We’ll find him some money. We’ll find it for him.
Tutor 1: Mr. Elliot, are you a fan of the ballet?
Dad: I wouldn’t exactly say I was an expert.
Tutor 1: You do realise that all pupils must attain the highest standards, not just in ballet, but in their ordinary academic work. No child can succeed without the 100% support of the family. You are completely behind Billy? Are you not?
Dad: Yes, yes, of course.
Tutor 2: Just one last question. Can I ask you, Billy, what does it feel like when you’re dancing?
Billy: Don’t know. Sort of feels good. Sort of stiff, and that...but once I get going, then, I like, I forget everything and sort of disappear. Sort of disappear. Like I feel a change in my whole body. Like there’s fire in my body. I’m just there, flying like a bird. Like electricity. Yeah, like electricity.
Tutor 1: Have a safe journey home.
Nanna: Post!
Dad: This is it.
Billy: I got in.
Dad: He did it. He fuckin’ did it!
Narrator: She came to a strange land in search of a new life.
Ada’s daughter: We can’t leave the piano.
Ada’s husband: But there are too few of us here to carry it now.
Narrator: She came to a husband she had never met.
Ada’s husband: With time I’m sure she’ll become…14)affectionate.
Narrator: And discovered a passion that would change her world forever.
The voice you hear is not my speaking voice, but my mind’s voice. I have not spoken since I was six years old. No one knows why, not even me. My father says it is a dark talent and the day I take it into my head to stop breathing will be my last. Today, he married me to a man I’ve not yet met. Soon, my daughter and I shall join him in his own country. My husband said my 15)muteness does not bother him. He writes, and 16)hark this, God loves 17)dumb creatures, so why not he! It were good he had God’s patience. For silence affects everyone in the end. The strange thing is, I don’t think myself silent. That is because of my piano. I shall miss it on the journey.
What a death! What a chance! What a surprise! My will has chosen life? Still, it has had me 18)spooked, and many others besides.
I teach piano now in Nelson. 19)George has fashioned me a metal fingertip. I’m quite the town 20)freak, which satisfies.
I am learning to speak. My sound is still so bad I feel ashamed. I practice only when I am alone and it is dark.
At night I think of my piano in its ocean grave, and sometimes myself, floating above it. Down there everything is so still and silent that it 21)lulls me to sleep. It is a weird 22)lullaby, and so it is. It is mine. There is a silence where have been no sound. There is a silence where no sound may be, in the cold grave under the deep, deep sea.
