在翻译时,有时适当地使用一点文言文,往往可使译文增色不少。当然,这绝不等于说,时至今日,还要主张用文言文。在文字的使用上,我们当然要用白话文。不过不少杰出的翻译家都具有很好的古文素养。要知道文言文表达精炼,言简意赅,有些文言文中的用语,直到今天,还有一定的生命力。英文原文中所表达的思想内容,如完全用白话来表示,其结果很可能字数用得多而意思还不一定译得透彻清楚。这时,如借助于一些文言文来表达,往往会恰到好处,可使语言简洁,文字精练。下面,举一些典型的译例,供读者作举一反三的参考。
