通过对国外经济发达国家交通工程研究及交通工程建设发展过程的分析，指出交通工程建设与学科研究可分为两个阶段──经济发展时期的建设阶段及经济发达时期的管理阶段。在分析我国国情、交通现状及发展趋势的基础上，提出我国交通工程学科“为我国当前的现代化交通建设及将来的现代化交通管理提供基础理论及应用技术”的发展战略及近远期发展目标，并对我国近期（“九五”期间）交通工程学科的研究重点进行论证、分析。
Through the analysis of traffic engineering research and traffic engineering construction and development process in developed countries, it is pointed out that traffic engineering construction and subject research can be divided into two phases: the construction phase of economic development and the management phase of economic development. Based on the analysis of China’s national conditions, traffic conditions and development trends, this paper proposes the development strategy and short-term and long-term development goals of our country’s traffic engineering disciplines, “provide the basic theory and applied technology for the current modern traffic construction and future traffic management in our country. And the recent (”Ninth Five-Year" period) transportation engineering disciplines research focus on demonstration and analysis.
