The insula is a cortical center buried in the lateral groove of the brain and is closely related to many important functions of the brain, including target-directed cognition, conscious awareness, autonomic nervous system regulation, internal perception and somatosensory perception. Island leaves may affect more advanced cortical functions, such as the frontal, temporal and parietal lobes, through the regions of these functions that are introduced into the brain. Islets are thought to be the “active center” for the onset of migraine in migraine patients, where the brain is able to switch signals that alter the internal environment, along with other chronic pain, through the regulation of the insula to complex behavior.
