  Let’s Wear Our saris
Host: 1)Hashtags serve different purposes. India knows that. Politics and fun? #selfiewithmodi. Serious issues around gender, like sexual assault,#India’sdaughter. And then there are style victims like #100sareepact, sari spelled s-a-r-e-e. That would be those beautiful flowing silk traditional dresses worn by Indian women, but now losing ground to jeans and ready-to-wear. Ally Matthan and Anju Maudal Kadam are with me from Anju’s home in 2)Bangaluru in India. Tell me what you’ve actually proposed with this #100sareepact.
Anju: You know, it started as a conversation between Ally and I. And we wanted to bring out the saris from our closet, saris that we were wearing actually only for occasions, and we wanted to bring them back into our everyday dressing. Social media 3)amplified that message for us. We put it up but more to hold ourselves as 4)accountable for what we were doing, and we decided to do the hundred sarees. People joined in.
Host: How many people have joined in, Ally?
Ally: We don’t have a clear fix on that number, but I think people joined in because it struck a chord with all of them. There’s an emotion that’s coming through all of this. There’s a voice that is emerging, and that is really what the pact is all about.
Host: What is the emotion? Are Indian women missing their saris?
Anju: I’ll tell you. That the pact is more than wearing the sari. The pact is about telling the story behind the sari, or a story about yourself in the sari, or how you’re feeling in that sari. The voices emerging are voices of fabulous women from the past who have been pathbreakers. There are voices emerging of people saying, you know, “I stepped out in my sari today, and all this is what I did and I feel like super-woman.”

  Host: Wow!
Anju: There’s another voice that says I went sarishopping, and that, you know, body types, body image, colour. People are talking about all kinds of things. It’s really, really bringing together people in a community almost, talking about what they like, what they dislike, and the sari’s now become a medium of story-telling.
Host: It sounds like a sari is very closely a…associated with a woman’s, an individual woman’s identity, so tell me your sari story, Anju or Ally, and what it says about you. Ally: For me, the ones that I really, really cherish the most are the ones that I inherited from my grandmother, who used to wear them every day to work. And she ran a factory, so I cherish them from the emotional perspective, but I also cherish them for what she stood for. You know, when you wear a sari and go to work, it immediately installs you with respect. People listen to you when you wear a sari.
Anju: I’m going to add to what Ally says. There are perhaps urban women that have given up some amount of sari-wearing, and that is what is coming back on that hashtag, and we have women saying, “Gosh, I hadn’t worn a sari for a year, but now they’re all sitting there and I’m gonna wear them, thank you.”
Host: So, Anju and Ally, how many saris do you each own respectively?
Anju: Gosh, not hundred. Not hundred. We’re gonna repeat, there’s no 5)vainness, there’s no 6)vanity in it. We’re gonna repeat like we repeat our jeans.
Host: And now that other women are putting their saris on and posting pictures, I’m wondering if it’s led to a little envy. You know, you see a really gorgeous sari that you just gotta have now?
Anju: Every story is a work of art. Every sari…
Ally: Every sari is a work of art. That is true.
Anju: Yeah. It really, really is.
Host: Ally Matthan and Anju Maudal Kadam, two friends in India who pledged to wear saris twice a week for a year. One hundred saree pact. Thank you very much.

看看#selfiewithmodi(与莫迪的自拍照)吧;关于性别的严肃话题,如性侵扰,那就看#India’sdaughter(印度女儿)吧。
