The mental health of women, children and adolescents is a major public health issue. In the light of the current barriers to effective treatment of these issues, researchers are looking for other promising alternatives to nutrition in order to better address mental health problems. The purpose of this paper is to review existing evidence of the relationship between zinc and its two major mental health problems, depression and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), affecting women and children. A literature review of the Medline and Psychinfo databases using key terms reviews the articles from January 1975 to May 2008 and focuses mainly on articles published in recent years and diseases that predominantly affect women and children. Although zinc has been shown to have a potential role in certain mental health conditions, we need to pay more attention to more in-depth research in this area.
