Time was Saturday September 11, 2010; the venue was The Great Hall of the People, located in Hangzhou, the capital city of eastern China’s coastal Zhejiang Province; the occasion was the West Lake Forum, an annual business event hosted by Alibaba, Hangzhou-based international e-business leader. The curtain lifted on the forum at half past three in the afternoon. Jack Ma, the president and CEO of Alibaba Group, made an introductory speech to an audience of several thousands of people.
Jack Ma’s introduction gave a succinct outline of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Jack Ma said, “I would like to introduce a friend to you. He is one of the most unusual of all the people I have come to know. He used to be nobody, but he worked hard with great confidence and motivation. He succeeded in achieving his dreams. Most Chinese know he is a Hollywood star. But before he started his acting career, he was a world bodybuilding champion, then a successful businessman, and now he is a state governor in USA. He is a high-profile social activist greatly concerned with environmental protection and ecological improvement. All these are reasons why I invite him to attend this forum. Now, His Highness Governor Schwarzenegger!”
In midst of music and cheering, Schwarzenegger walked onto the stage, dressed in a white-gray suite and a striped tie, waving and all smiling.
After shaking hands with Jack Ma, Schwarzenegger began to address the forum humorously. “I learned that Jack Ma invited Mr. Bill Clinton and Kobe Bryant as distinguished guests to attend this forum last year. This year Ma said he wanted to invite an all-round guest to stand for all guests. I am an all-in-one person. Since single-handedly I represent politics, art, sports, environment and business, it is appropriate that I attend the forum.”
The audience laughed and clapped their hands.
Schwarzenegger proceeded. “When I was in Austria and said I want to be a film star in USA, many relatives and friends said you are physically too strong and you have a difficult name and Austrian accent, they were afraid that I would have difficulties succeeding in America. I have made it through endeavors of many years. In the face of fear and uncertainty, we have two ways to respond. One way is you sit tight, complain all day and give in to failure; the other way is you stand up and challenge yourself and work harder and you refuse failure and see crisis as an opportunity. Then you become different and succeed.”
Schwarzenegger spoke passionately and in a resonant voice. As governor of California, he recommended at the end of his keynote speech the Californian strawberry to the audience.
After the keynote speech, Schwarzenegger and Jack Ma began a one-on-one interview. Ma was curious about the star’s muscles. He said, “I have millions of questions to ask. I have watched almost all the films that star you. Your muscles give people an impression of great power. I have practiced for more than 20 years but I don’t have big muscles. My question is, do you have any secret?”
Schwarzenegger replied, “I wrote a book 25 years ago about muscles. You can buy it from Alibaba website. By training, you can become stronger than before. That would be no problem for this. I still work out everyday. I think everyone can become stronger. The point is that you must commit yourself to the project. If you are willing to spend half an hour building up your body, you can have stronger muscles even if you cannot become a world body-building champion. Certainly you don’t need to work out as hard as I do.”
Ma turned to another aspect of success: “Most of the audience members here are entrepreneurs of small and midsize businesses. They have many dreams. What do you think is the secret of success? What should be their priority?”
Schwarzenegger had something to offer. “What you need is a plan and confidence and you need to work hard to carry out this plan. You even need to be crazy. When I first said I wanted to be the world’s body-building champion, my parents thought it was impossible. I did not change my mind despite their disbelief. I worked hard in order to realize my dream. Then I became the world champion.”
The next question is probably the one that most interested Jack Ma. “Do you buy things online? Do you buy things online for your wife and children?”
Schwarzenegger replied, “My kids love buying things online. They now and then show me a list of things they like to shop online. Whenever they see something new, they ask me to buy it. They want me to buy things for their mom’s birthday. I pay the bills.”
At the end of the discussion, Schwarzenegger stood up unexpectedly and said he wanted to give two gifts to Jack Ma. He joked, “I know it was your 28th birthday yesterday (everybody laughed). I have gifts for you.” His assistant brought the gifts. It was a pair of sunglasses and a black leather jacket, his signature costumes as the Terminator. Jack Ma gladly put them on then and there, thus a miniaturized version of terminator was born. Schwarzenegger said, “The California governor’s office as a term of office expired in 2010. Next steps, I may return to film and television industry, but has not been determined.” He commented Ma looked extremely cool in the black jacket. He would like to invite Jack Ma to appear in the fifth Terminator film.□
