The Moscow city of Soviets has issued an order demanding that all nuclear facilities built in the city must be completely closed by the end of 1999. This means that the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy, one of the most prestigious research institutions in the Soviet Union, had to move out of Moscow. Last fall, a commission responsible for investigating the safety of the three reactors at the Kurchatov Institute announced that the largest of the three reactors should be relocated to Moscow. The reactor has a power of 40 MW and is used to test materials used in future nuclear power plants. According to this decision, two other reactors with a capacity of 8 MW each will remain in Moscow (the two reactors produce neutrons for research and radioisotopes for medical use). However, the new order seems to make these three reactions
