能剧和狂言发源于14世纪,入日本传统四大古剧中之列,也是世存最古老的职业化戏剧表演。镰仓时代,著名剧作家观阿弥清继和世阿弥本清父子以当时盛行的滑稽剧猿戏为基础逐渐创造了能剧。由于缺少明显动作,吟咏起来也颇为单调,因此能剧为一种需要累积素养才能欣赏的艺术。最早的能剧舞台设在室外,主舞台6米见方,用漆过的柏树搭建,上盖神道教风格的屋顶。一个廊桥连接舞台作为演员上场的通道。舞台右后方是乐队和伴唱者,后面画的松树是唯一的背景。乐器通常是笛子、小手鼓、大手鼓和大鼓。主角的思想和台词由乐队唱出。能剧有极端抑制内敛的动作,清晰明朗却不甚悦耳的声音,和由数种鼓和
The dramas and rants originated in the fourteenth century and entered the four major traditional Japanese drama series. They are also the oldest professional theater performances in the world.
