The feasibility study was completed on the Trans-Asian Railway linking Singapore with Kunming. Among the three options for the east, west and center lines, China prefers to choose less capital and build a less-difficult-to-reach “east-line solution.” The total length of the Trans-Asian Railway is 5,500 kilometers. The proposed east route will start from Singapore via Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Finally, Kunming will be the destination. In addition, its railway extensions will be laid to Myanmar and other places. It is estimated that the railway construction will take 10 years and cost about 3 billion Hong Kong dollars. When completed, it will further promote political, economic, trade and communications links between China and the ASEAN countries.
