正如中文里的成语一样,英文中的成语(或称惯用语)也都是源于生活,蕴含典故。它们往往妙趣横生,一语双关。如果在写作中适当地加以运用,一定可以使文章更加传神达意,生色不少。
1.put one’s foot down 表示决心,加速
要加快汽车速度,便要用脚将油门踏下。因此,这句成语用来形容加快工作的速度,亦可比喻决心做某事。例:
Maggie is running around too much,and it is high time that her father put his foot down to teach her a lesson.
玛吉太贪玩了,现在正是她父亲下定决心要好好教训她的时候了。
2.put one’s shoulder to the wheel 竭力工作,通力合作
这句成语的意思是把肩膀放在车轮上,即表示要用尽全力去推动车轮。因此,这句成语也比喻竭尽全力去工作。例:
The councillor said that if we would all put our shoulders to the wheel,we could all accomplish a great deal towards increasing the benefits of the citizens in our city.
议员说假如我们能通力合作,在增加市民的利益方面就会取得很大的成就。
3.put the cart before the horse 本末倒置
马是放在车前来拉车的,而将马放在车后,便不能发挥马拉车的作用。因此,该成语比喻做事本末倒置。例:
