[World Nuclear News Web site January 10, 2008] Kazakhstan’s uranium mining companies are facing a shortage of sulfuric acid after a fire at a sulfuric acid plant and a delay in the start-up of some new facilities. Most of Kazakhstan’s uranium deposits are in situ leaching. Sulfuric acid is an important chemical reagent required for operations in in situ leaching. Due to the shortage of sulfuric acid, Kazakhstan’s natural uranium production in 2007 was 1000 tU lower than originally expected. In order to address the shortage of sulfuric acid, Kazakh mining companies adopted various measures to ensure the supply of sulfuric acid.
