以历史档案记载与口述历史调查等资料相结合来研究考察日军细菌战造成的1942年湖南常德石公桥、镇德桥鼠疫灾难,可以更真确地了解这场灾难的历史面貌:这场灾难使石公桥和镇德桥两地3000余居民中死亡200余人,死亡率约6%;国民政府防疫部门对疫情的反应较迟缓,但进行了积极的补救;历史档案记录这场灾难的疫源可能有误,应是七三一部队飞机在当地投撒细菌所致。
