炸药的威力是衡量炸药爆炸性能的重要指标之一。通常用铅铸扩孔法和弹道臼炮法等实验方法进行评定。前者方法简便易行,使用较普遍,但铅铸扩孔值的大小与炸药的威力不呈比例关系,只能作相对比较。弹道臼炮法可以测出功的数值,直接衡量炸药的威力,但设备较复杂。一般也采用弹道臼炮所测出的各种炸药的功值与标准炸药梯恩梯等炸药功值的相对比值来表示炸药的威力。但是在理论上如何表示和衡量炸药的威力呢?最早提出的就是贝尔得罗(Berthel-ot)的特性乘积,即以炸药的爆热Q_v与其比容V_o的乘积来表示的:Q_v·V_o
