鲁迅先生在《陶元庆君的绘画展览时》一文里有一段话说:“……他以新的形,尤其是新的色来写出他自己的世界,而其中仍有中国向来的魂灵——要字面免得流于玄虚,则就是:民族性。”这种民族性是从那里来的呢?鲁迅先生又在《陶元庆氏西洋绘画展览会目录序》里阐述说:“作者是夙擅中国画的,于是固有的东方情调,而自然而然地从作品中渗出,融成特别的丰神了”。我揣摸这两段话的精神,觉得民族性不外两种:一种是自在的,一种是自为的。由于陶元庆是中国人,生活的环境和习惯是中国的,从人事交往到艺术品的观
