生活与创作的关系、美术创作中的客观对象与艺术表现,个性确立以及主观能动性的发挥,对创作的重要意义等问题,通过绘画实践、理论探讨来认识的。一儿时曾听过这样一个故事:古代有个独眼国王,并且一条腿残疾。国王将一名画匠招进宫里为自己画像,画匠如实描绘了独眼和瘸腿,国王大怒,画匠被斩首;国王又招另一名画匠,这名画匠没有如实描绘,而是将国王描绘成完美的健全人,这名画匠也遭到同样的下场;第三名被招进宫的画匠,作品完工后,国王很满意,并且得到了很多赏赐——原来画匠设计了一个正在狩措的画面:国王一条腿蹬在山岩上,正一只眼眯着弯弓射箭。从这一简单的故事我们可以总结出:第一位画匠只是重复描摹了现实生活。第二位画匠对客观现实进行了生硬扭曲。第三位画匠画画时让一条腿蹬在山岩上,掩饰了腿的疾病,让一只眼眯着射箭,掩饰了眼疾。他采用了忠于现实又高于现实的表现手法。
