近来,随着冶炼工艺的发展,蓝晶石、硅线石和红柱石已成为重要的高温膨胀性耐火材料。国外高铝矿物很早以前就被用于制造优质高温陶瓷、发动机火花塞和高温计保护管、有色冶金和玻璃工业上的耐火材料。近几年来,钢铁工业成为使用这种耐火材料的主要应用领域,它几乎消费了世界高铝矿物总产量的一半。世界高铝矿物产量中,以蓝晶石居多,约占总产量(目前超过40万吨)的三分之二。主要生产国是美国、印度和巴西。美国是最大的蓝晶石生产国,1977年产量大于10万吨六十至七十年代初期,美国矿业局曾对东南部各州及西北部的爱达荷州蓝晶石类矿石进行了大量的选冶试验研究。采用了浮选、重液旋流器、重选——浮选等方法,取得了良好的成绩。扩大试验指标为蓝晶石精矿品位95%(矿物量)左右、回收率80%左右
