Abstract:Objective:The purpose of this study was to compare the specificity of gravitational resistance (GR) and hydraulic resistance (HR) by analyzing surface electromyography (sEMG) of rectus femoris during knee extension. Method: Eleven athletes performed 10 repetitions of knee extension under GR and HR conditions respectively. SEMG signals of rectus femoris were rectified, filtered, amplitude normalized, time normalized to compare the peak timing (PT) and duration (D). Results: PT (PTGR=32.7±6.5) and D (DGR=57.3±6.5) of sEMG under GR condition were significantly faster or shorter than those (PTHR=45.6±8.2 , DHR=73.6±6.7) under HR condition. Conclusion: Hydraulic resistance was characteristic of slower peak timing and longer duration. It might offer the unique advantage for enhancing specific strength in swimmers, rowers. Athletes of such sports should develop their specific strength by utilizing hydraulic devices more frequently.
