In 2004, after learning about the elective courses offered in the New Chinese Language Curriculum for Senior High School, I discussed with my colleagues what impact this would have on Chinese language teaching in universities. It now appears that the addition of elective courses in middle school languages has had a much lesser impact on the teaching of humanities elective courses in universities than was expected in the year. In the survey of the difference between the university language and the middle school language conducted by our university, the main reason why freshman students like university language is that the teaching effect is in sharp contrast with their previous high school language classes. In their memory, middle school language is monotonous, boring, mechanical, and boring, while university language is clever, jumping, lively and full of humanities. This reflects the fundamental difference between the middle school language, which aims at taking exams, and the collegiate language courses that focus on cultivating appreciation and humanistic spirit. In other words, the original assumptions of Chinese elective courses for middle school students and curriculum makers are much different, which is mainly due to the influence of the college entrance examination baton.
