Registering in the Psychiatric Hospital
(After contemplating suicide by jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge, 16-year-old Craig decides to go to the hospital to seek help. His doctor registers Craig for a one-week stay in the hospital’s 1)psychiatric ward. Craig is unsure if he made the right choice to stay, mostly due to the fact that his friends might find out when he misses school, especially Nia, his
2)crush and the girlfriend of his best friend, Aaron. Also, he is placed in the adult ward because there are too few teenage patients, and he understandably feels uneasy and a bit scared.)
Craig: Dr. Minerva. I uh…I’m feeling much better now. I was feeling bad this morning, but I’m okay now. So, you know, ①I’d like to go home, if that’s cool.
Dr. Minerva: It says here you’re suicidal and asked to be admitted.
Craig: Yeah, I thought you guys could do something quick. You know, like give me some 3)medication to make me feel better. Or…Look, I didn’t think that I’d be committed. I really don’t think I belong here.
Dr. Minerva: A lot of patients feel that way at first. Just give it a little time.
Craig: How little?
Dr. Minerva: Five days.
Craig: Five days?
Dr. Minerva: No more than 30. We’ll have an evaluation to see if you’re ready to leave on Thursday.
Craig: I can’t be here until Thursday because I’ll miss school, and my friends might find out where I am.
Dr. Minerva: It’s nothing to be ashamed of, Craig. Depression is a medical illness. If you were a 4)diabetic, would you be embarrassed by that?
Craig: Can I at least talk to my mom about this before…
Dr. Minerva: Of course, Craig, I just spoke to her, she’s very anxious to see you.
Mom: Craig, I knew you were having a hard time, but I had no idea. That you were…That it was…Well, you’re so brave, honey. I’m so proud of you.
Craig: Really, um…②’Cause I was actually having second thoughts.
Mom: Oh, no, hon. I think, you know, the doctors said they need you to stay here for a couple of days for observation. I think that’s a real good idea.
Craig: But I don’t think you really understand, okay? Some of the people in here are really messed up. I don’t think my roommate’s left the room in weeks.
Mom: I think we better leave it up to the doctor’s 5)discretion, you know. We’ve tried and they’re professionals, they can help you in ways that we can’t.
Craig: They took my cell phone, so some people might try to call the house. Just please do not tell them that I’m in here.
Embarassing on the Phone
(After getting a message from Nia, Craig calls her back. On the phone, Craig tries to keep the secret that he’s in the psychiatric hospital, but there’s so many embarrassing things that happen.)
Nia: Hello?
Craig: Hey, Nia. What’s up?
Nia: Hey! Just finishing my Gates Summer app. I’ll 6)freak if I don’t get in. What’s up with you?
Craig: Um, just feeling kind of, you know…
Nia: Yeah, I noticed. Is that why you weren’t in school today?
Craig: Yeah, I was feeling pretty 7)shitty, so I just stayed home.
Nia: Yeah, I get like that sometimes, too. Depressed or whatever. Do you take anything for it?
Craig: Um…
Nia: Look, I never told anybody this. Not even Aaron, but, if it makes you feel any better, I see a 8)therapist.
Craig: Really?
Nia: For, like over a year now.
Craig: I had no idea.
Nia: Yeah, it’s pretty embarrassing.
Craig: I take Zoloft.
Nia: Shut up!
Craig: I do.
Nia: Oh my God! ③We’re like so screwed up.
Craig: Yeah, we’re like partners in mental illness.
Nia: The illest.
Patient 1: I’m Solomon. I would ask you to please keep it down. I’m trying to rest.
Nia: Craig, who is that?
Craig: Um…
Patient 2: Excuse me. Will you be much longer?
Nia: Is everything OK?
Craig: One second, please?
Nia: Are you like in a crack den or something?
Craig: Yeah, no, it’s fine. Everything’s…
Patient 3: It’ll come to you. It will always come to you.
Nia: Where are you?
Craig: I gotta go, Nia, bye.
Everybody Knows the Facts
(Craig’s friends call him, everybody knows that Craig’s in the psychiatric hospital.)
Craig: Hello?
Aaron: Is this the 9)loony bin?
Craig: Okay, ④I’ve been putting this off, but I guess you should know more about my best friend, Aaron. He’s the kind of guy that life just comes easy to. He’s got a 4.6 10)GPA. I don’t even see how that’s possible. And he’ll probably get into the Gates Summer Program and claim something like…
Aaron: I didn’t even apply to that thing. They totally
11)recruited me. Whatever, it’ll look good on my college apps.
Craig: Not that he’d need it. His 12)extra-curriculars are out of control. I mean, Aaron does everything. He plays sports. He started a film society. He invented that
13)adapter thing that converts 14)vinyl albums into MP3s. I just couldn’t compete. How’d you get this number?
Aaron: My girl gave it to me. How’d you end up in adult psych? Do they serve beer in there?
Another friend: 15)Dude, can you get me any 16)Vicodin?
Nia: Come on, guys. Leave him alone.
Aaron: Seriously, Craig, what happened?
Craig: I don’t know. I had a bad night.
Aaron: What do you mean, a bad night?
Craig: I’m just, you know, feeling…
Aaron: Dude, you just need to chill more, okay? Your problem is, you never chill. I’m gonna be chilling tonight. Where you gonna be?
Craig: Here. I’m gonna be here.
Aaron: Oh my God, Craig! There is so nothing wrong with you.
Craig: Yes, there is. I’m depressed. I take pills for it. Ask Nia.
Aaron: Ask Nia what?
Nia: Craig! (Nia stops him because she is afraid that Craig will tell that she has the same situation in mental illness. )
Craig: Forget it! Maybe if you weren’t such a dick, people would talk to you more and you would know this kind of cuts out.
