The Indian poet Tagore said: “When the petals are taken, they do not get the beauty of the flowers.” For a flower, the beauty lies in the whole rather than in a certain petal; as for a poem. If the appreciator only stays in the playfulness of individual details and expressions, he does not appreciate the beauty of the work as a whole, nor is it possible to obtain a complete sense of beauty and to make a correct judgment of the work. Because the meaning of the whole goes far beyond the sum of its parts and parts. However, although “holistic thinking ” plays an important role in appreciating poetry, it can often be overlooked in actual poetry teaching.
