As a result of a long-term sales contract with Ontario-based Hydero in 1978, underground production capacity at the Elliot Lake mine in the Denison mine is expected to increase from 10,000 to 21,000 metric tons a day (five days a week). To do so, it is calculated that 6 million cubic feet per minute of fresh air must be transported underground to meet regulatory and Denison mine standards. To the south of the Keyes dam there is a large amount of remaining ore to be mined. The dam acts like a natural barrier that extends across the entire mine dividing the ore body into two parts, one on the north and the other on the south. Since the existing ventilation tunnels are located to the north of the dam, a new ventilation system is to be built to the south of the dam.
