丁村在襄汾县城西南约3.5公里处。遗址位于村南约600米处的汾河北岸的第三级台地上。南同蒲铁路由遗址南部穿过。丁村遗址在五十年代即因旧石器的发掘而闻名于世。属于新石器时代的遗迹、遗物在其周围屡有发现,但都没有做进一步有计划的调查和科学的发掘工作。1983年下半年,山西省考古研究所为配合南同蒲铁路复线工程,沿铁路进行了考古调查和钻探,发现丁村南面、铁路以北的遗址文化层堆积较厚,决定对此进行抢救性发掘。
