The Ukrainian crisis was one of the biggest international issues in 2014.It had its origins in the Ukraine's abandonment,in 2013,of its strategy of keeping a balanced position between the East and West, and its decision to sign the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement in order to carry out substantial strategic cooperation with the European Union.Former Ukrainian President,Viktor Yanukovich, made a subversive error:he first sought to be closer with the EU,then "temporarily suspended"preparations for signing the association agreement, and finally chose to side with Russia.Such drastic fluctuations in its foreign policy seriously shook Ukraine's strategic position and led to domestic political and social divisions. From the perspective of big-power games, the EU has hoped to include Ukraine in its own sphere of influence by signing the association agreement and pushing Ukraine to shift further away from Russia. The EU,based on its past experience, mistakenly believed that Russia would not overreact to this, that it would have to swallow the bitterness at some point.
