Long long ago, there was a swan with golden feathers. She lived in a lake. By the way, a woman and her two daughters who were very poor lived in a small house near the lake. They worked hard all year round, but they still lived a hard life and sometimes they even didn’t have enough money to buy food.
The swan was sad to see that. She said to herself, “I’ll give one of my feathers to them each day, and then they can live a happy life with the money selling my feathers.” That evening, she flew to the poor woman’s house and left a golden feather on the table without saying anything. From then on, the swam came every day and gave them a feather. The woman was very happy because their life was much better than before.
But day after day, the woman became greedy. She said to her daughters. “The swan may fly away one day. If so, we will be poor again. We should take all her feathers when she comes next time.”
“Oh, no, Mom!” cried the daughters, “This will hurt the swan. She helps us a lot!” But the mother wouldn’t listen. When the swan came as usual, the mother caught her and took all her feathers. But suddenly, the golden feathers changed into chicken feathers.
Then, the golden swan said, “Poor Mother, I came to help you, but you wanted to kill me. Now, I am leaving and will never come back. Never be greedy!” With these words, the swan flew away.

A friend of mine met with an accident driving in darkness. His legs were so hurt that he couldn’t move. What was the worst was he found himself unable to ask for help—his mobile phone went out of work as a result of exhausted battery (电池). Nothing could be done but to wait in cold wilderness. It was 8 hours later that day broke, and then the arrival of the rescue (救援).
It was almost unimaginable that he could stand the horror in the darkness for so long. Even more surprising was his explanation: “First of all I checked up my physical conditions and found myself not in mortal (必死的) danger. As there was no way to call for help, I leaned back in my seat, trying my best to keep the wound from bleeding. In this way I dozed (打盹) off.”
His story put an end to my regret for the failure of an exploration adventure that happened last year. A group of young men tried to explore a mountain cave and got lost. Unable to find a way out in the dark cave, they were frightened and ran anxiously without a sense of direction.
Finally they fell dead in fear and exhaustion (筋疲力尽). According to the rescue people that found them, the place where they got lost was only about 20 meters away from the opening of the cave. If they stayed on the spot when they lost their way and tried to calm themselves, they would probably sense a light glimmering (闪烁) not far away.
Don’t you think that you can compare it with life itself? When you meet with difficulties in life and work, you are lost in darkness. Mind you, it’s unclear yet and you needn’t put up struggle immediately. It seems to be a negative attitude, but a person who can afford to do so must have foresight as well as a great courage in the first place. ( )11. Why couldn’t the writer’s friend ask for help?
A. Because his mobile phone went out of work.
B. Because his legs were hurt.
C. Because he was in darkness.
D. Because he was in fear and exhaustion.
( )12. The group of young men died because _____.
A. they couldn’t find a way out
B. they were afraid of darkness
C. they stayed on the spot
D. they were in fear and exhaustion
( )13. The writer wants to tell us _____.
A. when you meet with difficulties in life and work you must run
B. when you meet with difficulties in life and work you must find a way out at once
C. when you meet with difficulties in life and work you must have foresight as well as a great courage in the first place
D. when you meet with difficulties in life and work you must wait
( )14. The underlined word “foresight” in the passage means _____.
A. view B. eyesight C. idea D. seeing ahead
( )15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Horror in the Darkness.
B. When You Are Lost in Darkness.
