Book description
This collection reviews the 30 year, development of contemporary Chinese comparative literature, presents the representative achievements of a group of discipline backbones during 30 years and, summarizes the experience obtained and problems to be solved concerning the Chinese comparative literature in theoretical propelling, academic expansion, exploration of research methods and explanation of classic cases, so as to leave historical witness the development of contemporary Chinese comparative literature and provide a beneficial reference for the further development of discipline research and the cultivation of comparative literature researchers.
30 years has passed since the revival of contemporary Chinese comparative literature. During the period, the deceased masters paved the road despite of hardships, and the old, middle and young generations of researchers carried on the torch diligently, making satisfactory achievements for the contemporary Chinese literature academy. Over the 30 years, a large number of important achievements were made in the research of discipline theories, international literature relation, comparative poetics, Chinese diasporic literature, medio-translatology, literature imagology, literature anthropology, and cross-discipline research of literature and religion as well as other fields of Chinese comparative.
Researchers of this collection, including the local Chinese researchers, and professors teaching in famous overseas universities for a long time explored many issues in the oriental and western comparative literature rooted in the Chinese culture and literature, with a broad time and space of looking at the world, starting from different discipline backgrounds and with their respective theories and methods as the entry points and participated in and propelled the academic development of Chinese comparative literature from different aspects. They not only made outstanding contribution to the subject reviving and system construction, but also laid a solid foundation for the future development of comparative literature in value position, problem awareness, theoretical explanation, method exploration and model construction.
This authoritative collection of comparative literature summarizes the experience obtained and problems to be improved of Chinese comparative literature in the propelling of discipline theories, expansion of academic field, exploration in research methods and explanation of classic cases, so as to leave historical witnesses for the development of contemporary Chinese comparative literature. Trace the Way to Revival of Comparative Literature Discipline by professor Le Daiyun pursues the historical trace of development of Chinese comparative literature discipline over the 30 years, collects representative speeches and theses from individual aspect, from point to line, and from line to plane to present a dynamic image for a brief exploration and recall on the development history of Chinese comparative literature discipline.
In the book From Comparative Literature to Comparative Culture System, Professor Liu Xiangyu raised a series of questions at first. What discipline is comparative literature? How did it come into being? What are its influences? What are its crises? What problems does it have? How are its current situation and development prospect? Does it need its discipline theory? What is its relation with various existing literature researches such as state literature, national literature and local literature and what are the differences? What is its relation with other human disciplines and cultural researches and what are the differences? And then he gives clear explanation and description on these questions, and discusses the discipline theory of comparative literature, demonstrated its discipline nature, describes its evolution and historical trace, summarized its achievements, distinguished its crisis, analyzes its problems and explores its trend from different aspects.
Around “the world factors of Chinese literature”, professor Chen Sihe carries out a representative demonstration. Under the perspective of world literature, he explains the evolution of contemporary Chinese literature and its creative achievements, proposes propositions including the overall concept of Chinese new literature, awareness of confession in Chinese literature, realistic fighting spirit, modern fighting awareness, modern survival awareness, pioneering and normality and evil factors, providing rich enlightenments for the Chinese literature and state literature from the aspects of axiology and methodology.
From Comparative Literature to World Literature by professor Zhang Longxi does not only discuss literature, but also talks about the philosophy, history, religion and other fields of human disciplines, discussing the issues of comparative research of Chinese and western literatures and cultures on a broader background. Professor Wang Xiaoping combines the traditional textology, hermeneutics and appreciation theory with the research on comparative research, describes the literature exchange history of China and Japan in the wide cultural background, has an integrated research on the Chinese literature in Asia, expands the research fields of study of The Book of Songs, Dunhuang literature and poetics and also injects new thoughts into the comparative research on classic literatures such as Japanese Manyoushu. There is intensive information without jerky and theoretic words, and the style is fresh and natural, flowing between elegance and plainness, combining decades’ cultural experience of the author in Japanese university as a teacher. In Semiology and Cross-culture Research, professor Ding Ersu first specially demonstrates the heavy weights that should be mentioned in the history of modern semiology like Saussure, Peirce, Hjelmslev and Barthes, and then respectively discusses the Marxist literature and art theory, cultural relativism, aesthetic judgment criteria and formation of literature classics. Then, he makes a specific analysis on the Chinese and foreign literature works and cultural phenomena, and constitutes the so-called “cross-culture research”, also called “research on Chinese and western cultures”.
In Comparative Poetics and Cross-boundary Position, professor Yang Naiqiao thinks that the rise of comparative poetics makes comparative literature researchers think deeply its theories, and the research on comparative poetics will also be positioned to the diversified cross-boundary position. Moreover, comparative poetics, with disappeared research boundary, states its own discipline nature in a complete open way, and the disappearance of discipline boundary has been essentialized thoroughly and perfectly by the research on comparative poetics. What makes the academic circle happy is that comparative poetics, with its essentialism gesture of disciplinary de-marginalization, responds to the call of cross-disciple research in the trend of globalization. In a word, academic research should break disciplinary boundary. Readjusting the boundary of disciplinary research is a tension that most of the researchers cannot avoid. Comparative poetics takes cross-disciple research as a new field at the moment of rise, which well presets the inclusiveness of academic research in the 21st century properly and shows the long-term expectation for the coming of the age.
In Research on Comparative Literature and Translation, professor Xie Tianzhen focuses on two aspects. The first part focuses on the discussion on disciplinary theory of comparative literature and the issues on teaching and teaching material construction of comparative literature, while the second part focuses on the research on the medio-translatology, including the discussion on translation literature, history of translation literature and theory on contemporary Chinese translation. These papers clearly outline his academic research track in the late 30 years, and also centrally and specifically present his process of proposing original academic opinions in the two major fields of comparative literature and medio-translatology, and also reflect the research trend of “translation conversion” in domestic comparative literature circle and the “cultural conversion” in translation circle from a side. Professor Rao Pengzi divides his research into comparative literature, comparative poetics and overseas Chinese literature, both including the parallel research on the origin, formation and structure of Chinese and western dramas, and also the research on the influence of Chinese and western dramas in development. There is individual research on the global spread of Chinese classic literature and regional literature, and also the comparative research on several theoretical issues and scopes in the Chinese and western literature theories, as well as the research on overseas Chinese literature in the horizon of comparative literature. This attempt not only deepens the theoretical achievements in this emerging academic field, but also expands a new academic room for the comparative literature, providing new research contents and horizons. This book has cross-culture academic horizon, diversified and open literature concepts, distinctive and unique issue awareness, towering theoretical thought and solid and meticulous demonstration of historical materials.
Yan Shaodang, through the research on “literature relation” of the East Asia and the thought on the corresponding “comparative poetics”, gradually comprehends the knowledge of relevant categories of culture to form the academic idea and methodology system of “literature genesis”. While elaborating the academic ideas, with the actual “case” of interpretation on Japanese classic literature and comment on dozens of works of the same theme as the model, he attempts to demonstrate the basic perspective of taking “detailed textual reading” as the research basis and mastering the “diversified textual context” as the observation culture, striving to finally reveal the nature of multi-type culture in the civilization times in the channel of civilized flow and “incorrect understanding” of conveying, so as to explain the basic principle of “literature genesis” with “cultural variant” as the core.
In Comparative Literature: Theoretical Thinking and Literature Explanation, Dr. Wang Ning reflects the disciplinary significance of comparative literature from the perspective of cross-discipline theory, proposes the death of old comparative literature and the birth of new one, as well as the internationalization strategy of Chinese comparative literature and literature theory in the times of globalization. Then, from the perspective of Chinese and western literatures and the theoretical dialogue, he examines the acceptance and deformation of main literature theories of western countries in China, and also proposes the structure of post-modern neo-Confucianism. In the following, he discusses the dynamic role of translation and its significance to the construction of world literature from the aspects of comparative literature and cultural research, and reviews the modern Chinese literature in the context of world literature. Finally, from the aspects of acceptance and influence, he examines the influence of western literature and art trend and authors and theorists on the Chinese literature, and meanwhile, traces the spreading and acceptance of modern Chinese literature in the west. The above research achievements are not the entire of the library, but some of it. At the beginning of incubation and publishing of this library, Fudan University Press had planned its great academic scale. Xie Tianzhen, Chief Editor of the book series, Vice President of Chinese Society of Comparative Literature and professor of Shanghai International Studies University pointed out that as a discipline, comparative literature has made outstanding achievements in China since its restoration, and it’s the time to carry forward achievements in China. From the very beginning, the press had thought well of this subject. By cooperating with various authors closely, in order to make the most excellent researchers in the old, middle-aged and young generations in the Chinese comparative literature stand out collectively. They launched this collection to reflect the outstanding achievements made in the Chinese comparative literature during the 30 years since the reform and opening up, and with a wish to face the academic circle nationwide. It is hoped that the publishing of this library would make its due contribution to the cause of Chinese comparative literature.
