Before the Nobel Prize in chemistry was announced in 2011, few would have thought that this winner was actually a “Dou’e” in the scientific community. He is the Israeli materialologist Daniel Shetman. In 1982, Schertmann discovered an “alien” substance that lingered between crystals and non-crystals, the quasi-crystal that broke the common sense of crystallography. Almost no one believed his discovery then, and he was therefore pushed aside by the scientific community, a famous chemist even calling him a “quasi-scientist.” Nearly 30 years later, however, the “associate scientist” stood on the highest podium in the scientific community. And what quasi-crystal brought by him will bring any change to the scientific and technological life?
