As the new anchor-woman at Phoenix TV, Zen Zimo established a unique style because of her quick mind, sharp perspectives and cool appearance. When we investigate her reading background, another of her many dimensions is made apparent.
From a wall streeter to an anchor-woman of Phoenix TV, Zen’s reading world is as complex as may be imagined. As a matter of fact, when listing the books she has read, it is impossible to outline a clear skeleton of her reading range. She has read romantic fiction to Buddhist masterpieces and also historical records as her change in profession was so abrupt and so significant. She now says that reading is a way to enjoy life.
Books play an important role in her childhood memories, as they affected her deeply. Both of her parents are professors in the Chinese language department. Consequently, her house has always been full of many different books. Like many other children, Green fairy tale and Anderson fairy tale were her favorite. She can also remember the story of the Princess and the Pea. Different from other children, she liked to choose the books which she was interested in from the bookshelf on her own. She finished reading Jean Eyre, the novel she loves best, when she was grade six in the primary school. During high school she began to read the works of Qiong Yao(琼瑶), especially I am a piece of cloud. Zen says that as someone born in the 1970s, she couldn’t resist the temptation of Qiong Yao’s novel. At that time, she also liked the novels of Ba Jin and the plays of Cao Yu. And she continued to appreciate the snow city by Liang Xiao Sheng.
Zen always chooses what she likes to read and her parents never limited the range of her reading. Her mother also told her that she should be independent rather than a man’s accessory.
During her time in the USA Zen seldom read books. Although some courses taught famous works like those of Nietzsche, she was not interested. Rather, she began to read Zhang Ailing’s novels and was interested in themes of exquisite desolation. She couldn’t adapt herself to the life of white’s and Zhang’s novel serves as a portraiture of her loneliness.
She joined in the Morgan Stanley after graduation and took part in the coalition of BP and Amoco. This life was very exciting, but she had to do a lot of jobs related to large numbers data, which eventually made her decide to leave. She hesitated for a long time until she read a book named Sugar which made her decide to pursue the life she wanted and leave Morgan.
