In the Spring & Autumn Spring Festival (770 – 476), Lord Jing of the State of Qi appointed Tian Rangju as the commanding general to lead a troop to strike at the allied forces of the State of Jin and State of Yan. He also appointed Zhuang Jia, one of his favored minions, as the supervisor of the army to watch over the entire military actions.
Tian Rangju made an agreement with Zhuang Jia, based on which they should meet each other next noon in front of the military camp. On the following day, Tian arrived at the camp very early and ordered his men to prepare for the range pole and dripping disk, which could be used as the timer. As the appointed time came, he gave out the order to organize the army and prepare for the march.
However, Zhuang Jia did not show up at the appointed time and even much later. Tian sent people several times to urge him to hurry up. Zhuang Jia did not show up until the dusk and apparently got drunk. Tian Rangju asked him why he did not arrive at the camp on time. Zhuang Jia seemed not to care. He said that he had relatives and friends come to his home to bid farewell to him and he had to throw a party to treat them.
Tian Rangju was very angry and condemned Zhuang Jia who failed to live up to his duty as an important minister of the country and the supervisor of the army since he just cared about his own families and friends instead of the entire country. Zhuang Jia still thought it to be a trifling thing and not worthy of so much attention. With the favor of the lord, he turned a deaf ear to Tian’s warning. However, Tian Rangju turned to the military justice, asking him what punishment should be given to those who delayed the maneuver of the army.
The justice answered: “That person should be beheaded.”
Hearing this, Tian Rangju immediately ordered his men to arrest Zhuang Jia and take him to the scaffold. Zhuang Jia visibly trembled out of the fear. Seeing this, his entourage immediately went to the palace to request Lord Jing’s help. Upon hearing this, Lord Jing was very surprised and sent an emissary to save Zhuang Jia.
However, before the emissary could arrive at the camp, Tian Rangju had already had Zhuang Jia beheaded in front of everyone inside the army. Soldiers and generals were shocked to see the commanding general kill the supervisor and they all swore their fealty. At this time, the emissary sent by Lord Jing charged into the camp on a horse, shouting Lord Jing’s order to release Zhaung Jia. Tian Rang answered calmly: “The commanding general has the right not to follow the order of the lord when marching and fighting outside. This man is arrogant and selfish. If I do not punish him, our morale and efficiency will be greatly affected.”
Seeing that Tian Rangju dared to disobey the lord, the emissary cursed Tian in a high tone. Dissatisfied with this man’s arrogance, Tian Rangju called to the military justice again, asking him what punishment should be given to those running amok in the camp. The justice answered: “they should be beheaded too.”
The emissary paled upon hearing this. Tian Rangju calmly said: “It is not right to behead the emissary sent by the lord.”But he killed three servicemen of the emissary and the horse he rode. Then, he sent the emissary back to report to Lord Jing, who had no way but to allow his actions.
The strict discipline Tian Rangju applied to his troops got good result as they easily defeated the allied force of Yan and Jin.
