Paul Simon (Singer and Song Writer): Some songs I write for the pleasure of writing a song. It doesn’t have any great meaning; it’s just a song. Songs are nice. Kids sing songs all the time for the pleasure of the singing, pleasure of the 1)rhythm. “London Bridge Is Falling Down,” those are songs. Some songs you try and express yourself emotionally; those are different songs for me. And they express what I feel.
The Diamond Moment
Ladies and gentlemen, Paul Simon with 2)Ladysmith and Black Mambazo.
Lorne Michaels (SNL Producer): We caught a big break on Graceland because he…
Paul: Yeah.
Lorne: …he was supposed to do the show earlier, ’cause the album was coming out and “Diamonds” wasn’t on it.
Paul: Because everyone was in town to do the show…
Lorne: Right.
Paul: … I said, “Oh, let’s do, you know, let’s do another song.” So we recorded “Diamonds”…and did that on the show, which was…
Lorne: Yeah, which killed….
Paul: It was sort of shocking, because there was no record—the record hadn’t come out.
Lorne: Right.
Paul: …and, you know, here was this, you know, South African music and musicians just sort of appearing, with Mambazo dancers…
Bakithi Kumalo (Electric Bass): First time I was on Saturday Night Live,… I was nervous before we went there, ’cause I’d never been on cameras and TV.
Paul: And the band playing and…it was 3)explosive! The reaction was so loud, that people were…I guess they were screaming, cheering, I don’t know what it was.
Lorne: It was very 4)theatrical and just took the audience. Sometimes the music is happening and everyone’s listening; it has just a 5)profound effect.
Paul: That was the most popular example of 6)world music up…at that point in time. Although world music existed, Graceland was the first to me No. 1 album that was world music.
The Boxer Moment
Amy Poehler (SNL cast member): My first show on SNL was, I believe, like, 7)two weeks after September 11th, 2001.
Lorne: Firemen came and Port Authority guys and…police were from 8)Ground Zero—they hadn’t left; they’d been there the whole time—and so they came in to this, which was, I’m sure, completely 9)disorienting.
Ladies and gentlemen, the Mayor of New York City, Rudolph Giuliani.
Paul: The firemen…that’s what I remember more than even the show.
Lorne: It was the 10)thousand-yard stare? You know, it’s…
Paul: Yeah, the reality of it was…
Amy: There was a lot of 11)electricity in the room, and a lot of energy, a lot of people really wanting to feel better.
Paul: The Mayor spoke.
Lorne: It was a very powerful night.
Mayor: Good evening. Since September 11th, many people have called New York a City of Heroes. Well, these are the heroes.
Paul: If my memory’s correct, I think he just called and said, “You know, I think, I think you should sing ‘12)The Boxer.’”
Lorne: For me anyway, I thought that Paul singing, in particular singing that song, would, you know, capture the strength of the city and the emotion.
Paul: The end I feel that that’s somehow, that makes a statement about, you know, 13)persevering and 14)enduring. It wasn’t more emotional than I anticipated. It was within my emotions; didn’t 15)interfere with…with how I performed.
Lorne: What you look at in performers is that ability to get out there and transform that experience so that something remarkable happens.

保罗：其实有点令人震惊，因为还没有唱片，那张唱片还没上市。

保罗：而且，你知道，那首歌……那是南非音乐、歌手与伴舞团就这么仓促亮相了。
贝基希·库马罗（电贝司手）：我第一次上《周末狂热夜》，还没上场，已感到很紧张因为我从来没有出过镜或上过电视。
保罗：乐队在演奏……场面很热烈。大家反应很大，大家都在……我想他们是在尖叫欢呼吧，我也搞不清楚。
洛恩：效果很夸张，观众很受用。有时候好音乐自然而然地就出现了，而大家都细细聆听，会有意想不到的效果。
保罗：这是当时世界音乐最受欢迎的歌曲。虽然世界音乐之前已存在，但是对我来说，《恩赐之地》是第一张能够被称为世界音乐的代表唱片。

洛恩：消防局和港务局的人，还有警察也来了。他们一直坚守在零地带，他们一直没有离开现场，一直在那里。因此他们来到节目现场时已经完全不知所措了。
女士们、先生们，我们有请纽约市长鲁道夫·朱利安尼。
保罗：那些消防员……他们比节目更让我印象深刻。
洛恩：他们当时的目光茫然，知道吧，那种……

保罗：最后，我觉得那首歌可以表达出坚强与不屈不挠。我当时情绪并没有太激动，还可以控制得住，没有影响我的演出。
洛恩：我们在表演者身上寻找的是可以站到舞台上，带来精彩的表演和独一无二的现场体验的能力。
