Two.days before she died, my brothersand I met at her nursing home and took her,for a short ride in a wheelchair. While wewaited for all the family members to lift her, weak body back into bed, Mom fell asleep. Not wanting to wake her, we moved to the far.end of the room and spoke softly.
After several minutes our conversationwas interrupted by a weak sound coming fromacross the room. We stopped talking andlooked at Morn. Her eyes were closed, but shewas clearly trying to communicate with us.We went to her side.
   "Whirr," she said weakly.
"Where?" I asked. "Mom, is there some- thing you want? Whirr," she repeated a bitstronger. My brothers and I looked at eachother and shook our heads sadly.
Mom opened her eyes, sighed, and withall the energy she said, "Not was, say were! "
It suddenly occurred to us that Morn wascorrecting brother Jim.'s last sentence. "If itwas up to me ..."
Jim leaned down and kissed her check."Thanks, Morn," he whispered. We smiled ateach other and once again shook our hands ...this time in awe(敬畏) of a remarkable teach-er.

What happens to a mother-daughter re-lationship when girls become teenagers? Itseems that girls go from playing "dress up" toarguing with their mothers about how theyshould dress.
When girls are 3-4 years old, they loveto "dress up"in their mothers' clothes, puton their mothers' make-up, cook, and dowhatever else their mothers do. This is thetime .when she can be classified as being a"mama ' s girl".
How can girls change so much fromchildhood to the teenage years? Many parentslook for the answer when their daughters be-come teens. Often when a girl enters highschool, her behavior changes as well as herphysical appearance.
This is the time that the mother-daughterrelationship can take a turn. It's difficult fora mother to know that her daughter is nolonger totally dependent on her. When thedaughter starts wearing revealing (袒胸露肩的) clothing, dating, and just wanting to bemore independent, a mother starts to feel leftout, or not needed. The number of argumentsincreases, and the humber of times when themother and the daughter get along happily de,creases.
When you notice how much your rela, tionship has changed, try to believe positivethings can come out of the change. Put all thenegative aside and concentrate on what yourmother is feeling instead of just on what youare feeling. When it seems too hard to handle, take some quiet time and write out your feel-ing. Maybe at another time, you can sharethem with your mother and try to find a wayto better your relationship. If you don't feelcomfortable sharing your feelings, at leastwrite them down so you can get them out. It'sbetter than keeping them bottled up inside.

For years and years people have .been. saying that the railways are dead. "We can dowithout railways"people say, as. if motorcarsand planes made the railways unnecessary. We all keep hearing that trains are slow, thatthey lose money, that they're dying. Btit thisis far from the truth. In these days of expen-sive oil, the railways have become highlycompetitive with motorcars and planes. If youwant to carry people or goods from place toplace, they're cheaper than planes.
And they have much in common withplanes. A plane goes in a strange line and sodoes a railway. What is more, it takes youfrom the heart of a city into the heart of an-other. It doesn't leave you as a plane does, miles and miles from the city center. Itdoesn't hold you up as a car does, in endlesstraffic jams. And a single train can carrygoods which no plane or motorcar could everdo.Far from being dead, the railways are verymuch alive. Modern railway lines give you asmooth , untroubled journey. For we have just entered theage of super-fast trains, traveling at 150 milesan hour and more. It was a day to celebrate if your familyhad put most of its money in abank. You willget more money back because of a recent risein interest rates(利率) .
On October 29, for the first time in nineyears, the People's Bank of China. (PBOC)raised interest rates. The rate for one-yearRMB deposits (存款) was increased from 198per cent to 2.25 per cent. And the rate forone-year RMB loans(贷款) went up from 5.31per cent to 5.58 per cent. Longer term ratessaw higher-increases.
So what are interest rates? Banks offersome money to encourage people to keep, theirsavings in a savings account, and ask moremoney in return if you borrow-money, fromthem. The percentages of the extra money arethe interest rates.
If your parents have borrowed money from banks to pay for houses or cars the inter-est rates rise was not good news.
An increase in the interest rate on a loanmeans the borrower will need to repay more tothe bank. For example, a person whe bor-rowed 10,000 yuan from the bank had to re-turn 10.531 yuan before the interest rises.Butafter the interest rates were increased, he hasto pay extra 27 yuan per year.
The rise came, following a great demandfor the cooling of the over-heating Chinese e-conomy. For several years, pushed by a hugeinvestment and construction projects, thecountry has had the fastest economic growthin the world. But this can be damaging just asit is when a person grows too fast and can nolonger fit their clothes. It is hoped that with ahigher interest rate people will act more cau-tiously and take less risks when borrowingmoney.
"The rate rise will help the economy tocool down. It will reduce investment in unnec-essary industrial and construction projects,"said Su Ning, deputy governor(副行长) of thePBOC.
  52. If we deposit 1000 yuan in the bank forone year after October 29, how much canwe get? (The tax rate on interest rate is20%.)
  A. 2,16yuan. B. 13.68 yuan.
  C. 15.84 yuan. D. 18 yuan.
  53. What is the purpose of the rise in theinterest rates?
  A.To attract greater investment.
  B. To make people earn more money.
  C. To carry out more construction projects.
  D. To cool down the over-heating Chineseeconomy.
  54. By saying "this can be damaging just as itis when a person grows too fast and canno longer fit their clothes" the writer
  A. warns that if the economy grows toorapidly, it will cause trouble
  B. warns us that industry will suffer a loss
  C. advises us to buy bigger clothes whenwe grow older
