Ever since I was only afew years old, horses have been my passion. My dream was to ride a horse. When that timefinally approached my anxious little life, myheart beat a thousand times a minute.
It was a warm summer day in Odessa,Ukraine, and we were at a park. My mom was buying several things for home while I wan-dered around to find something that made myeyes twinkle. I spotted a figure from heaven, afour-legged beautiful animal was standingdown the block, breathing heavily. I ran up tothe horse, not even knowing how to pet it, justexcited to see the most beautiful creature. Hewas shining white, with a well-brushed tail.He was playing with his bit(嚼子) and chewedon the reins(缰绳). I could tell this horse wasbored. Where was the owner?
Right away I assumed that I could ridethis horse. I turned the other way and went tosearch for my mom to get some money. Ispotted her buying groceries and dragged herto where the horse was. The owner was backand stated that it was his horse and I couldn'tride it, A warm stream of tears flooded downmy cheeks as my mom tried to convince theman to let me ride the horse.
He finally agreedfor a costly price. He taught me how to get onthe horse and explained to me that it was im-portant to keep heels down and arms steady. The gentle beat of the horse's trot (小跑)awakened, all the senses in me as I bouncedup and down on the saddle (鞍). I was thehappiest little girl in Ukraine, having the timeof my life. I began planhing how I was goingto buy a horse after I became a millionaire. Before I knew it, the ride was over. Surpris-ingly, I actually learned to control the horseand change the pace.
That day was probably the happiest timeof my life. Most children wouldn't have asmuch fun as I did. Several years later, aftercoming to America, I began to get involved inshow jumping. If it weren't for that time inUkraine, I wouldn't be able to enjoy the mostamazing sport, one where you and anothercreature truly have to bond.

How often one hears child wishing theywere grown-ups, and people wishing they wereyoung again. Each age has its pleasures, andits pains, and the happiest person is the onewho enjoys what each age gives him withoutwasting his time in useless regrets. Childhood is a time when there are fewresponsibilities to make life difficult. If achild has good parents, he is fed, looked after, and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossi-ble that he will ever again in his life be givenso much without having to do anything in re-turn. What's more, life is always giving newthings to the child-things that have lost theirinterests for older people because they are toowell known. But a child has his pains: he isnot so free to do what he wishes to do; he isrepeatedly told not to do something, or beingpunished for what he has done.
When a young man starts to make hisown living, he can no longer expect others topay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfort-ably. If he spends most of his time playingabout in the way that he used to as a child,he will go hungry. And if he breaks the lawsof society as he used to break the laws of hisparents, he may go to prison. When I opened the first "Body Shop" in1976 my only object was to earn enough tofeed my children. Today "The Body Shop" isan international company rapidly growing allaround the world. In the years since we beganI have learned a lot. Much of what I havelearned will be found in this book, for I be-lieve that we, as a company, have somethingworth saying about how to run a successfulbusiness without giving up what we really be'lieve in.
It's not a normal business book, nor is itjust about my life. The message is that to suc-ceed in business you have to be different.Business can be fun, a business can be runwith love and it can do good. in business, asin life, I need to enjoy myself, to have a feel-ing of family and to feel excited by the unex-pected. I have always wanted the people whowork for "The Body Shop" to feel the sameway.
Now this book sends these ideas of mineout into the world, makes them public. I'dlike to think there are no limits to our "fami- ly", no limits to what can be done. I find thatan exciting thought. I hope you do, too.
